Method and Red Concert

Published by seantrott at 5:04 pm under Random Thoughts Edit This

As some of you may know, Method Man and Red Man played at the Phoenix on November 9 (last night), 2008.  I went into the concert with moderate expectations.  I knew that the openers would not be great (and I was right), but I enjoy listening to the Wu-Tang Clan, and from what I’ve heard of Meth and Red, they are what one would call a “dynamic duo.”

As I mentioned before, the openers were tedious and not great.  There were a few groups that were decent, but more in the sense that they were tolerable to sit through and not laugh.  I sat in the back most of the time, but when Andrew and I ran into some friends of his, we were inspired to go up towards the front.  Everything got better from this point on.  The group right before Meth and Red was not bad at all.  I wouldn’t buy their music, but it wasn’t terrible.

As soon as they announced Meth and Red coming onstage, everyone cheered and held up the “W” sign.  The atmosphere in the room instantly changed.  I can safely say that Meth and Red are the best live musicians I have ever seen.  I mean, I loved the Beck and Radiohead concert I went to, but the thing about Meth and Red is: they truly enjoyed themselves up there.  They were playing at a small theater in a small town, and yet they made the most of their stage, and they really seemed to love playing.  The audience was obviously ecstatic, and they played off our enthusiasm.  What’s great is that I didn’t even know half the songs they were playing, and yet I seemed to pick each song up as they played.

And then they stage dove, which just amped the concert up about a million times.  Knowing that I was helping Method Man to stand above the crowd just gave me such a great feeling.  And then Redman stands up at the top of this huge stack of amps and just jumps.  Stupid?  I think not.  Amazing and stoned?  I think so.

After, Andrew and I got a picture with Redman, which was simply epic.  He asked me how old I was and told me I should be in the movies.  It was possibly the best moment of my life.
